Fathomless Billows of Love

Here are the lyrics to one of my very favorite hymns:

Far away in the depths of my spirit tonight rolls a melody sweeter than Psalm
In celestial strains it unceasingly falls o'er my soul like an infinite calm.
Peace, peace, wonderful peace,
Coming down from the Father Above
Sweep over my spirit forever, I pray
In fathomless billows of love!

What a treasure I have in this wonderful peace
Buried deep in the heart of my soul
So secure that no power can mine it away
While the years of eternity roll!

I am resting tonight in this wonderful peace
Resting sweetly, In Jesus' control
For I'm kept from all danger by night and by day
And His glory is flooding my soul!
Ah, soul!  Are you here without comfort and rest
Marching down the rough pathway of time?
Make Jesus your Friend ere the shadows grow dark
O accept of this peace so sublime!

These words were written by W. G. Cooper in 1889, and they ring in my mind quite frequently.  Sometimes it's difficult to see ourselves as surrounded by peace.  Irritations, big and small, drip into our lives like a leaking faucet (and sometimes like a flood!)  But I believe, no matter the trial, that it is still possible to sense the love coming down from the Father in fathomless billows.
Often I find myself feeling that I don't deserve peace.  Guilt clings to me like a filmy residue, especially if I think I have "gotten myself into" whatever situation is worrying me, and I actually resist peace.  It is then I have to remember that the source of this ever-flowing peace and love are the piercings of my Savior.  He knows exactly what I've done wrong, and He chooses to shower me with love anyway.  He died to break down the wall of partition between me and God, and He succeeded.  Nothing I can do will reverse that victory and take the peace away.
By letting go of what we see, and realizing what is unshakably true, then we can feel those fathomless billows - then the tender face of our Messiah becomes more visible, and we can fall into His arms.  As we're walking, we can become aware of the angel bodyguards surrounding us.  As the worries and cares come rolling off our back like tiny droplets, we're swept into a place of trust like no other.

And I think when I rise to that city of peace
Where the Author of peace I shall see
That one strain of the song which the ransomed shall sing
In that Heavenly Kingdom will be:
Peace, peace, wonderful peace
Coming down from the Father Above
Sweep over my spirit forever, I pray
In fathomless billows of love
